June Wrap-Up

Another Pride Month draws to an end. This month has been something else and we have really seen a lot of history begin to happen. I hope you remember that Black Lives Matter and that we begin to see the problems that Native Americans face daily with the rise of their protests and voices. Being Native American myself I hope you all back both with a fierceness that any racist should fear.

Here are the books I read for June 2020!

February: Mix of Updates and Book Reviews

Welcome to the month of love! I didn’t get much reading done because the beginning of the year for me is always hectic. I’m always restarting my savings for the holidays at the end of the year and planning random trips to go hiking. It just gets all around crazy and I just work non-stop to make up for all the time off at the end of the year. Am I the only one?

Ok so last month I started Caraval and didn’t mind it but I sadly had to put it on the did not finish shelf because I just became uninterested in it in the middle of the book for some reason. I couldn’t really pick it back up or really care about it. Thankfully I usually go to the library so I didn’t buy this book and regret spending my money on it. I know this is an unpopular opinion as I see people rave about Caraval all over social media but I just didn’t care about it as much as I would have liked to.

This month I picked up some books from the library I had not heard of that sounded interesting. One was The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green. I was shocked at how much I really liked this book when I started. I took it everywhere so that if I had a moment to read I would. This seemed to be the book to kickstart my reading habits back up!

The synopsis of this book: A shrewd princess whose father is plotting against her. A brave soldier turned traitor. A loyal servant on a quest to avenge his family. A streetwise demon smoke hunter in desperate need of money. A charming thief with no clue about his true identity. Their lives would never intersect, until a war between kingdoms bubbles up, and the dangerous truth about demon smoke intertwines all their fates. Welcome to The Smoke Thieves, a tangled web of political intrigue, shifting alliances, and forbidden love, in a world where sometimes no amount of magic can keep you safe.

Something about it just called to me to pick up and read. It does swap the point of view out each chapter so if you don’t care for that you may not care for this book. I have been known to pick up books like this one and rave over how much I love it. But I do like to give warnings about it since I know there are people who do not care for it.

This book is one of those books that you enjoy but you can tell its setting up for the series. It follows the character Catherine the most and has an almost Six of Crows feel with the group of kids who end up a part of the whole story. This book is just really a backstory for all of the characters that will probably be the main storyline. I didn’t not enjoy it but I also felt this could have been less dragged out. I still gave it a four star review.

ETS had some well done up ideas but I didn’t feel it. It didn’t flow together for me. I couldn’t get into the story to even care about the main character. Have you read this book? If so, what are your thoughts?

Doing DNF to books really sucks for me because usually I can finish a book and have no issue but these three have become boring to me. 😦
